Red River Herbs

Elderberry Syrup

4 oz. Bottle: $10

Elderberry syrup is an indispensable part of the home medicine cabinet as a natural remedy for the flu, colds, and seasonal allergies. All of the ingredients are organic and responsibly sourced, or ethically wildcrafted in central Texas myself. Refrigerate after receiving. This syrup will last at least 3 months in the refrigerator.

Elderberry: Elder has a long use of effectively reducing the severity and duration of colds and flus, which continues to be demonstrated in human studies. One mechanism of action is believed to be its ability to prevent viruses from replicating, which is why it’s so powerful in the early stages of illness. Its antihistamine activity aids in symptom relief, even in the case that illness or allergy has already set in.

Astragalus: Astragalus root is an antiviral and anti inflammatory herb that supports immune function by stimulating white blood cell activity. It’s traditionally used in Chinese medicine as a tonic to improve overall health and combat fatigue. I’ve noticed a significant difference in syrups made with and without astragalus, and always include it in my formula.

Ginger: Well-known for supporting the clearance of viruses and respiratory congestion. Reduces inflammation while warming the body. Lots of fresh grated ginger=that spicy kick you taste! In addition to the syrup, I recommend simmering chopped fresh ginger for teas whenever you’re ill.

Cardamom: Warming aromatic with diffusive action. Adds a lovely flavor.

Elderberry tincture: This is included to incorporate the alcohol soluble constituents of elderberry, which aren’t fully extracted by the syrup decoction itself. The addition of tinctures also promotes the shelf life.

Bee balm tincture: Another potent antiviral. An amazing plant with antibacterial and respiratory supporting constituents. One of the first herbs that I lean on for sore throats.

Local unheated, unfiltered honey: What can’t honey do? In this case, it acts as a cough suppressant and throat soother to help the medicine go down.

When you know you’re being exposed to illness (someone in the family or office, plane travel, etc), take a tablespoon daily as prevention.

If you feel a tickle in your throat or any other preliminary symptom of cold or flu, start dosing aggressively--3 to 4 times a day--to head off illness altogether.

If you are actively sick, you can take a tablespoon every couple of hours the first day. Taper down as symptoms improve.
